Hi hope everyone is well. I recently purchased a few bits off aliexpress.com and saw a digital clock kit which I added to the order, it arrived and I managed to mislay it so the next time I was on the site I ordered another and in the time it took to arrive I'd found the original lol. So now I had 2 so decided to assemble the later one first, it went together fine and worked OK.
As I was on a roll i thought I'd do the first one. This kit was slightly different and also a component a 1n4148 diode was missing, a quick Google search said a 1n4007 diode I had could (in some circumstances) replace a 1n4148. I had some 1n4007 diodes I'd ordered for a pal, he needed one but I had to buy 100. I did the swap but it didn't light up like the other later kit, as the diode was rated for higher voltage than the original I decided to increase the voltage to 9 volts from the 6 volts I was using. It still didn't work but the 220 capacitor popped scaring the s#!t out of me. I'm really interested in working out if it was my diode swap or something else that happened?

I've just realised that the imput connections are opposite to each other so I reversed the polarity of the power feed. What a numpty I am!!!

A 1N4007 can replace a 1N4148 in some cases, but it’s much slower and may not work properly in signal paths. The capacitor popping suggests overvoltage or wrong polarity, so I’d double check the supply voltage and capacitor orientation first.
