    Not sure what sensor to use

    3 loops with different resonances, set up all at right angles, might be excited by a pulse. At least 3 detectors are needed I suppose. As for processing the information I believe the modern solution would be AI, which for me takes the fun out of everything.

    Magnifying tool for tiny circuit boards and surface mount?

    I'd be looking for a jewellers loupe. I've tried using a stereo microscope (on an industrial board) and I think the loupe is probably better. Passive glass lens technology is still available :)

    Not sure what sensor to use

    You could embed 3 miniature microphones in a die, and send the sounds from them by radio to an AI. With training the AI will be able to provide the final orientation of the die. I guess that makes it easy?

    Microwave ovens ?

    I have seen that "sometimes...?" a high voltage capacitor in the magnetron circuit of a microwave oven goes short circuit, so maybe there is a chance of finding a good magnetron in a junked oven.
