I was just thinking of the hole through the middle and that could house not only the wires but a small solid bar for ground, that'll get me heaps of current if needed

    why not use an extension chord? the issue is that running the lower power side longer is the loss is more noticeable. you can try this chord and it will work but I would definitely use an extension chord on the mains side instead

    go the 11volt route and then chuck a couple of diodes in to knock down the voltage use a power regulator (pretty cheap these days)
