solution to soft start an ac induction motor

Just as the title of the thread ask, I am wondering what type of solutions I have for soft starting a 120v ac induction motor with starter coil and capacitor start? It is a 1HP. This is on a lathe so I would like to stick to 120V to avoid any extra external electronic motor controllers needed to...

Needing some help to define electric motor

Looks like a bi-polar stepper to me to. You will need a driver to run that motor.

Replacing thermal fuse with something that will reset

So then buy fuses that are rated for a higher temperature a few degrees might make all the difference. Looks like you might be the one with the wild imagination. :) The fuses aren't accomplishing much if they melt after the motor has turned off. Digikey is as good as any place to start. You can...

Replacing thermal fuse with something that will reset

Could be very dangerous to someone who doesn't know the machine is rigged to take off fingers.

Whats a good but simple program to draw circuits on my pc?

That is exactly it. If you can draw a couple lines and circles, you can represent any component you want. You can make new IC's that are just coming onto the market. Once you make a new component and save it to your library then you can select it and insert it into any new schematic. Quite...

    Crashing after 145 seconds

Because you made it sound like that it is the compilers job to make sure the watchdog timer doesn't reset the uC... ;) We get it, you're a 'basic' guy

Whats a good but simple program to draw circuits on my pc?

Yes, type in "pot" hit enter and then change the property value to 50k Two things... Tinycad is nice, but after playing with it for a short while I found that some of the components wouldn't line up with other component ends. I hate drawing crooked lines in schematics. Looks way to cheesy for...

    Crashing after 145 seconds

I know what it does. But as bob says, if it is something you need then you should be capable of coding it yourself. I have always used C, so the basic nature that something needs to be implied and included is ass backwards to me.

    My Power Supply Saga

How many? Looking at your datasheet, it states that Icl = Vin - Vout < or = to 10V 5A min Icl = Vin - Vout = 30V 1A

Whats a good but simple program to draw circuits on my pc?

the print out's look much better, more legible to the eye. You can also change the page size and then the parts symbols will look bigger naturally.

    Crashing after 145 seconds

But why the need to reset the timer when disabling it seems the more logical approach?

Whats a good but simple program to draw circuits on my pc?

KiCad is very useful for drawing schematics, I found it one day and was using it to design PCB's the next. It really is that simple. But it has no simulation software. Multisim and proteus are the big boys. Cost money but do it all in real time(up to a point) for simulation. There is plenty...

    Boiling capacitor!

And when that storage device charges up it is essentially seen as an open circuit. This is why a series cap between amplifiers stages is common practice. To block the DC component from affecting the next stage of amplification.

    Can a transistor do this?

Will the switching be something like PWM or similar to a light switch, in that it will stay on and off for long periods? If it is PWM then I would say go with MOSFET over the BJT. The other case would be suitable for either, though a BJT may cost less.

    230v to (around) 12v in smallest/simplest form

Well what are your current requirements and what is 'small'? As maverick says though, you are playing with a serious shock hazard with mains voltage. It can be a deadly game. Know what you are getting yourself into.

    Blown capacitors in PC

http://www.badcaps.net/pages.php?vid=31 I would highly consider using the capacitors recommended on this site as replacements. Where you buy them is up to you. When I repaired my video card I bought the rubycon MBZ and MCZ series.

DC power supply from AC through bridge rectifier

think of a glass of water. Capacitors store current, like a glass holds water. As the load consumes more current, the capacitor is emptied per say quicker. Like a glass of water that is being poured faster. capacitors dump stored current to try and maintain the voltage across the capacitor. The...
