    If the Wiper Looses Contact with no connection to the one terminal, than the resistance goes to Infinity. If the Center in connected to the Center, than it just goes to the Total Resistance of the pot. This is better as it offers PROTECTION from damage to other parts in some situations.

    CerCer: I usually recommend to connect it to the Alternator Output. Because of Voltage Drops between the Alternator and battery, this will result in a slightly Lower Voltage of charging, Especially at High Currents. Look at the picture overlay for these connections.

    I would just put a 1N4001 Diode in series with the panel and than connect it directly to your phone. This diode will reduce the voltage by 0.6 volts and it will also prevent the battery from discharging back into the solar panel, when there is no sun.

    When I Said:Or use an Ultra Violet LED and Photo transistor. I Also ment a Ultra Violet Photo transistor. Most Photo Transistors now are designed for Ultra Violet. This will give the best sensitivity and little effects from natural light.

    Years Ago, I bought a Professional Version of "Electronic Workbench", About $800.00 if I remember correctly. Many circuit that work in real life Didn't work in the Simulations. And VISA VERSA.

    If its a Red, Green, Yellow or Blue LED, you will need a Visible Light Photo transistor. But these also Detect Ambient Light, so that can be a problem, unless shielded from outside light sources. Or use an Ultra Violet LED and Photo transistor.
