    ETI Australia

Yes I've visited them several times so far - interesting and useful back-issues. What's hair-pullingly frustrating is to browse through old previously purchased issues of mags, find an interesting project, only to find half of it is in the non-bought issues.

    German translation

Very true. As a user of the German-made "Profilab Expert" digital simulator, I occasionally get an error message (in German). I found that using a German-English dictionary sort-of helps, but as you said, the final word-for-word translation can sound like gibberish. I now use the full phrase in...

Purpose of end loop on FM wire antenna?

:Kicking Myself: What with 'flu, medication, early morning hours, my brain cell had expired. Realise now that I got confused with helical loading coils used on some rigs. I dont know about poking my eye out - I think I shot myself in the foot!! Head clearer today.

Morse code led without a micro controller

Wow! I've just learnt something new re the SOS distress code. When doing signals with the Naval Cadets c. 1970's, we all presumed the characters were separate. I've also been playing around this idea using Profilab Expert Simulator. 30 bit-width reduces gate-count. Thanks for share. :)

    Capacitor question

Just a thought.. You have disconnected the caps to test them? At almost double the rated value, it sounds as if the cap under test is also reading parallel circuit capacitance, or maybe paralleled with its 470 uF partner. However, two paralleled 470u's would still be far off at a calculated 940 uF.

    Radio Silence

A cotton earbud dipped in acetone or laquer thinners can help to temporarily soften the loc-tite. Also, if the antenna screw is far from a supporting pillar-post, pressing down to seat the screwdriver bit firmly could crack the PCB. If you see that this area of board is 'floating' first support...

Purpose of end loop on FM wire antenna?

Hi. On my hi-fi, I have the standard 'T' shape folded dipole antenna, which uses a smaller version of coax plug. On other receivers, I've seen just a simple single-wire extending from the set. However, while shopping recently, I noticed that several Hi-Fi's use a new FM antenna design - a single...

Other magnification options, at varying depth-of-field capabilities and resolution include: Plano-convex collimator lens removed from a mag-lite torch (flashlight), high magnification with very shallow depth of field, extreme close-up for IC, solder-joints, SMD components, etc. Make-up cosmetic...

    Success at last

Letting the smoke out occasionally is a hazard of the profession / hobby. My Major-Tech DMM which knocked me back several grand recently blew a PCB track when I tested 220V AC while still on 'inductance' scale. Early morning hours, brain tired, lack of concentration, etc...

Are older computer components worth anything?

I saw a DSTV program a while ago where these scrap merchants in the US salvage precious metals from scrapped computers and industrial digital electronic boards. Apparently the IC's contain gold, although probably in minute amounts. Hobbyists in your area may be able to use the LED's etc.

    Enlarging hole in reflector?

Enlarging: I'm thinking of something along the lines of the steel-conduit reamer bit for enlarging the ID. The actual reamer bit is probably too angled, which would make the mounting unstable. Another idea would be to get hold of a narrow taper cone, such as on a PVC ground-spike which my solar...

What type of wire is copper wrapped around fluffy threads?

A butane 'BIC' type cigarette lighter flame flicked over the end 5mm or so 'flashes' the shellac, but hold near end with fingers to prevent igniting entire length. Then clean carbonised shellac with folded scrap of emery paper or kitchen-sink 'zim' pad. Basically - clean, bare copper ends. For...

Any Linux (specifically Ubuntu) users here? HELP!

Does your system also use a registry database, as with Windows? A few years back, I eventually managed to completely remove a similar problem app through carefully searching, editing and removing relevant keys and data.

    Adding new components to LTSPICE

Thanks for sharing this invaluable resource, Harald. As a new user of LT-Spice XVII and Diptrace, I was about to start flooding the forum with questions. Now I can first browse the resource to raise my "CAD IQ" a bit. I see exciting potential for future simulation / design once more literate...

    Help With Electronic Drumset

Somewhere in me ol' collection of books and mags, there is a project for an electronic drum simulator. From what I remember, the author took the piezo>pulse trigger a step further. For each 'drum', a top piezo detected the pulse, then another piezo, mounted off-centre below it through a thin...
