My first circuit is a bit advanced (H-bridge!)

I would also look at using Mosfets instead of bi-polar transistors, they are now pretty much the common way for what you are doing.

Does anyone know what this is?

Normally a shorted common mode choke on the power input would not cause a problem, in this application it is just a suppressor.

Can't find the transformer I need so need to build my own

The transformer core and the secondary wire gauge are all aspects to be considered when sizing a transformer and the relative windings. Usually stated in (K)Va .

Can't find the transformer I need so need to build my own

So you will end up with 5v+ after rectification! Why not just pick up a suitable toroidal version and customize the secondary? Very easy for these types.

    PCB layout software?

The new ver 6 has just been released this month.

Does anyone know what this is?

That would be if it is a PTC resistive device, I suspect it is a MOV. Could be either?

Does anyone know what this is?

A MOV is usually connected directly across an AC or DC supply, see if you can tell in this case. A MOV is rated for normal operating voltage and Joules, i.e. the energy it will absorb before destruction, as in the case of a large power surge or spike.

Newb needing guidance on 3-phase service.

I have only come across those in an industrial installations Never seen residential 120v done that way?

powering a dc motor from ac?

Plus a typical DC motor only needs a rectified supply, no cap necessary. From the other site, it IS a Universal motor.

Newb needing guidance on 3-phase service.

If you have the set up per Blue jets post, I would expect you to have all 3 phases available ? These transformers were often supplied in industrial applications to share the 120v loads across 3 phases for banks of lighting fixtures.

Newb needing guidance on 3-phase service.

So where does the 120v come in. The residential service in N.A. is a secondary of a 1ph centre tapped transformer 120v-0-120v ?? Is this an industrial installation or residential?

Newb needing guidance on 3-phase service.

Where are you located,? If you had 3ph service there would be 120deg between each phase. Also the voltages do not sound right, if 3ph. if this was 3ph and single phase to a star neutral, it would be multiply by square root 3

    high torque dc motor

I recently picked up a couple new/surplus automotive 12vdc geared seat motors <$10.00 , not sure of the price full retail, 12v though! I would think there a few selections out on the web, Chinese maybe?

Any Canadians figure out the shipping cost problem?

I don't select anything, Digikey take care of what shipper they use, I believe it is FedEx over night for me, $8.00 under $100. order, free over $100, no brokerage . It has been this way for years, unless they just changed things within the last couple of months, but it still looks the same?

Any Canadians figure out the shipping cost problem?

I am located in Canada. I receive Digikey shipments regularly, P/P is only $8.00 up to $100 after that it is free. It is at my door next day air and no brokerage or extras. Anyone else, I tell them I clear my own customs and attend the local CBS office and fill in a B3.

Balanced load, splitting a 220V outlet

Yes, the transformer N is earth grounded at the source as well as the Neutral entry point at the panel.

Balanced load, splitting a 220V outlet

Yes the neutral is the centre tap of a 1ph 240v transformer secondary. It is taken to earth ground at the panel Only, but there is some exceptions which concern industrial control equipment where a grounded neutral is missing. .If the two 120v circuits are protected at the rated current, you...

Balanced load, splitting a 220V outlet

Yes, That is about the crux of it, the neutral would only pass any difference in current. i.e. not the sum. If L1- N -L2 , there will be no difference in efficiency.

Balanced load, splitting a 220V outlet

A common neutral shared between L1 & L2 results in the difference in current between L1 & L2. in the neutral. For e.g. if L1 socket has a 10amp load and L2 also has a 10amp load, the current in the shareed neutral will be zero! P.S. N.A. is 120v-240v
