    it is just easier way to draw it that way, the motor could just as easily be drawn 'outside' the bridge. The triac control is in series with the input to the bridge, AC side. BTW, ensure you buy a linear pot, not logarithmic. M.

    Yes the components are not super critical, the 3.3k resistor is to limit the max. current through the cap. You may occasionally see a common mode toroidal choke in series with the output lead of the Triac. M.

    Any of the bridge devices and the BEMF rectifier are prime culprits usually, If a bridge component shorts, it usually takes out another one, either SCR or rectifier. You need to test them all. M.

    No just use the pickit3 to load the application pgm directly to Pic memory via the ICSP. I usually install a ICSP socket or the location for it on all final PCB's, this allows new firmware to be added without removing the Pic. Otherwise I use a development board that such as the Picdem2 boards. M.
