    improvised ignition system

Hi bcredneck and welcome to this forum! i don't know about the hall sensor, but for the CDI you can have a look at the product here under http://www.designnotes.com/downloads/K2543_Manual.pdf It's on kit form, easy to repair and even easy to reproduce. Olivier

Thermal vias in thermal pad of IC?

Yes that's it the solder paste island are on the 4 corner for sure. it' s a common (and needed) practice to have such complex solder mask. see the figure 13 here under http://blogs.mentor.com/tom-hausherr/blog/2011/04/06/pcb-design-perfection-starts-in-the-cad-library-part-15-qfn/ Olivier

Thermal vias in thermal pad of IC?

You can place thermal pad under via knowing that solder paste are not placed on the whole thermal pad surface but is spread in 4 (in this case) the room between each solder paste "island" is used to place via's (this avoid the soldering penetration mentionned by Harald Kapp) check the PCB...

Reliable 18v to 5v USB voltage converter.

Let's summarize: -Not a car application, no needs for TVS -Your proposal http://www.ebay.com/itm/MC34063-DC-D...item417600b394 seems OK so. -Car lighter type are not suitable (without mods) -Adding a polyfuse is a good habit Olivier

Reliable 18v to 5v USB voltage converter.

You can maybe go for a Belkin product, those guys have a good rep http://www.amazon.com/BELKIN-F8Z445ttP-F8Z445ea-Belkin-Charger/dp/B0047T79TA Olivier

Reliable 18v to 5v USB voltage converter.

I will picture it. Ceramic caps are reliable, the problem here is the lacks or transient voltage suppressor at the input. In cars you must deal with cold-crank and Load-Dump Transients ! Olivier

Reliable 18v to 5v USB voltage converter.

Hi, I bought exactly the same Ebay down converter and I can tell you that they don't least more than few months. Indeed Arduino Ebay boards, relay boards and others works quite well but power supplies need more demanding components like power diodes, power FETs good capacitors...For mass...

    Splicing HDMI Cable?

Yes Ian nice soldering work will be at least as good as UR splices but you need to be fast to avoid insulation melting. UR splices are probably suggested because they don't need any soldering skills. Olivier

All sensor based on the same technology should work like that. The current is converted to voltage by the (internal or external) load resistor. You can maybe go for a mockup to validate that; By the way how do you intend to calibrate the sensor conditioner ? Olivier

    Op Amps

here a schematic of the sensor and the load (100 ohms here) I am talking about. It's look like few manufacturers include the load in the sensor itself and state the output in mV so. http://touchstonesemi.com/articles/nanopower-circuit-design-in-low-frequency-sensor-applications Olivier

Here an AN for an oxygen sensor. The output is specify as a current, when stated as voltage a load is specified, intrinsically the are current source to me. In the AN depending on the model we have 30 or 50mV full scale on 10K. http://www.alphasense.com/industrial-sensors/pdf/AAN_003.pdf...
