    Many LED's require a series current limiting resistor in order to work - they also require around 1.6 to 3V to work too. A single AA battery won't cut it but using two AA's will but a series resistor really should be used. They are sometimes built-in to LED's but without knowing the part...

    Besides this being a double post (you ask this on another thread) the values stated on datasheets are often the MAXIMUM values the components can be subject to - not the voltages they 'produce'.

    The device 'stuck' to the board is a crystal - often used to generate clock signals or for timing (real time clock for example). It's not a 'fault' per se however that green capacitor beside it seems rather swollen on top.... that could be an issue.

    LCD? Banging it likely dislodged the connections to the display or even damaged the display. Post a pic of the display and we might be able to tell. A fix is possible.

    Without a schematic the best you can do is open it up and post pics of the internals. We'll be able to identify the relevant sections and (possibly) spot the fault, or at least tell you where to test to prove any fault condition.

    Could be a defective tube (internal short) caused the spark gaps to fail. Not much point in trying to fix the electronics unless you can determine the 'quality' of the picture tube (tester).

    Exactly. Have you Googled such a circuit? They are commonly used in over/under temperature sensing circuits and such like. The comparator output can drive a relay or solenoid.

    Try a new power pack/adaptor. It should have the voltage and current rating shown on it - any power pack that matches the voltage and has AT LEAST the current rating shown should work. You might have to fit your own DC plug on it though (unless you buy the proper replacement).
