    Welcome to EP. Is there a "pattern" in the not working LEDs or are they "scattered" around? The LEDs are usually driven in groups. To identify the LEDs parameters a good LED should be tested. It can be done in board or taken out and measured with a power supply a series resistance and a DMM.

    Welcome to EP. It is indeed a diode,but hard to say which. The package could be other SODs like 57,61,83 can you please measure it (both dimensions). If you can ,try to make a small diagram of what the diodes are connected to. Is this grainy material sand?

    Not clear enough. Industry and factories are general terms and mean practically nothing. Infrared is line of sight, mostly short distance many times in a room. RF for garage doors is a very common 315/433Mhz , outdoor, range less than 50M or so. .

    Yes, you can use a single Transistor on the 12V instead of S1(and eliminate S2). A Mosfet Transistor is a good choice.

    Zapper, The trick is to buy from a legitimate and trusted seller like Digikey ,Mouser etc. Buying on Ebay spells trouble and fakes. In the soldering world materials the name Kester is the one you are after. It will not be cheap but will be worth any penny... and pain;)
