    Yes it does have a start/run capacitor. I assume that is what is housed under that big hump on the motor. :) That was my first thought and the reason why I thought to spin it and then turn it on while still spinning.

    Variable resistor pinouts

    I know this will probably confuse you, but you can also connect p1 p2 and p3 to all different connections and then p2 would be more like a variable voltage pin out. Since the resistance on either side makes up a voltage dividing network.

    A grinding fan? I highly doubt it was an overcurrent issue. More like a friction fire!!!! Some people will try and oil/grease these noise fans, only adding fuel to the potential fire. Next time spend the $5 dollars and replace the fan.

    Dave is correct, the emitter is tied to the battery on both transistors. The emitter is the one with the arrow attached to it. Q2 emitter is tied to the + side of the battery and Q1 emitter is tied to the - side of the battery.

    You might also want to take a look at powershell by microsoft. It will allow you to get a very more defined view of exactly what is using your resources. It has helped me a time or two to track down an erroneous process sucking the life out of a pc.
