    Don't bother. Use a lower current rated switch to activate a relay carrying the heavy load current. i.e simple plunger button activating a car accessory relay.

    It might actually be a 'dead short' - manufacturers often use 'zero ohm' resistors as opposed to wire links when populating boards.

    Looks like a single wire with a trace colour to me...... however, if it is two wires then it's very likely a hall effect sensor and potentially a 'neutral detect' device. It's easily tested using a magnet. The workshop manual should have a wiring diagram that reveals all.

    If it only has one wire going into it then it's 'nothing' i.e. a simple plastic cover for an unused wire. Is there anything 'exposed' that resembles a contact of any kind? We can only side the 'side' of the part.

    Please use either current limiting or place an inline fuse in the 12V rails - 2A fuses will suffice. FAilure to do so could result in massive damage if there is a short elsewhere in the circuit.

    No, he didn't get it wrong - you misread his post and missed the bit where he stated the common connection would be ground.... to the OP - yes, with two 12V batteries connected as described the common point is the ground and the two 12V posts remaining will be + and - 12V.

    If the current flow changes (drops) between using the 6 cell pack and 8 cell pack then the 8 pack cell has a faulty cell in it. You can only produce 10A from a 7.2V source if that source has a sufficiently low internal resistance to permit that level of current.
