    Another possible cause of hum is the common-mode choke at the input of the power supply. This gets pulsed at twice the mains frequency. One rated for higher current might reduce the hum, but its larger physical size would prevent it from being fitted in the supply.

    Ok. Looks like the semiconductor is a 0.6A 400V sensitive gate triac. If it's fried, a suitable replacement (perhaps with a higher current rating) should be easily obtainable.

    If the circuit layout differs in any way from the ok one, then perhaps the FET goes into spurious oscillation. That could account for excessive heating.

    Why the caps on the FET gates? They will slow down the switching action and increase the heat generated.

    The size of the magnet is irrelevant: it's the magnetic field strength which is relevant. Any small modern magnet should do. You will need to think of a circuit to condition the sensor output to enable the LEDs to be driven. Depending on the circuit it will possibly require a supply voltage...

    According to the datasheet, the drv50553 output as a function of the sensed magnetic field is like this :- This should give you a clue as to how you can distinguish the magnetic field direction. Note also that the output voltage range is 0V-1.8V for this field.

    That may be so, but the charger draws the current you are measuring (about 30mA) from a 50/60Hz AC mains supply, so the CT sees only 50/60Hz.

    The 12A current rating for that MOSFET applies only if you can heatsink it well enough to keep its base pad <=25C, which may well be near impossible in a practical application. I'd go for a FET with at least twice that rating.
