    What's one of those? Is it a tester for 9V batteries? I think you'd be better served by getting yourself a proper test meter - they aren't expensive (a few $) and could assist with many other forms of fault location.

    Pin 9 is through the pre-amp. The MP3 device is likely to not require pre-amplification and the main amplifier input is via pin 4. Plus it's easier to find the volume control!

    At the volume control is the usual place. Apply your input directly across it - might need a capacitor to block DC, depends on the schematic. Can you post it?

    No 'single' LED I know of has 100% coverage for luminance output - they are ALL limited by their physical construction. The best results I ever had from a 'modified' light LED source was when I put white LEDs into ping pong balls!

    If you can find the schematic for the set you can discover the model of remote control IC that was used and, from that, the coding that the chip uses or, potentially, an actual matching 'sending' chip.
