    Hello, Newbie here. Power Question

Hi Larry, Can you be more specific. A giant stereo? The lights dim?. Stereo lights or town lights?:) What do you mean by 110V capacitor? There are many types. Martin

Identify base, collector, and emitter of transistor

Let me see what I can come up with:). Sounds like fun.. Got to finish my roast dinner first.... Martin

    Frequency accuracy

Hi Paul, I don't know anything about Ham radio, but found this site which could answer your question. Read it all or scroll to the bottom for your 14 mhz question. Martin

Identify base, collector, and emitter of transistor

I bought a cheap component tester that sounds similar. It gets confused between inductors and resistors. So not very useful. But it is pretty accurate with transistors so far. I just don't trust them and still check the datasheet to see if it's correct! Kind of counterintuitive.. Martin

    Interchanging Triacs

I wont, I promise...:D But can't wait to use it with my obnoxious brother-in-law. It just made me laugh.. Marty

Identify base, collector, and emitter of transistor

Uncle Chris, That is so true. Doing back flips all over the table. I just look up the datasheet. I can happily work out whether it's NPN or PNP though. Your comment earlier about throwing out good transistors because of that test is also a good point. I had a situation last month where I threw...

    CD Tray Won't Open

Apart from the above suggestions. I would guess that a disc is stuck. This unit stacks the discs rather than having a circular 5 disc tray. What makes this worse is that the other 4 discs are held up above the tray. You may have to open the casing and manually remove the discs. They are located...

    Circuit Help

Hi Jessica, This sounds very similar to an LED cube construction. You can either have a common anode or common cathode to the whole matrix. Or am I not understanding correctly? Martin

    Interchanging Triacs

I absolutely love that answer.. Nearly fell off my seat laughing:p You don't mind if I use that and pass it off as my own? Martin

Thanks Dorke, The first page has really inspired me to carry on reading. How come you find really useful web sites? Never mind, really interesting. Thanks all the same.:) Martin

    Help Identify the component

So I was correct. The circuit will continue normally (after fuse replacement) if it blows? I was referring to the OP (re-directing). A short cannot happen unless the current is shorted (directed) at something else. Otherwise there is no circuit problem. The main reason for initial failure is...

    Help Identify the component

Ok Minder.. But what about failing open?. The circuit works normally without protection (parallel). Also what about diverting the current to ground when shorted? I need these answered so that I understand. Thanks. Martin

    Help Identify the component

Hey Dorke, forgive my ignorance. But perhaps you can elaborate on that statement? I was under the impression that MOV's are either connected in parallel OR series.. If a MOV is in parallel to both phases and fails 'open', no current can flow. So the original circuit will work normally after the...

    Help regarding possibility and planning

Bump? What is this? Oh, a reminder!!! Don't bother bumping. Come back with another idea! Show us what research you have done! What module (if any) you found! Search Nixie tubes too. Look for something SIMPLE for starters. Oh, also, I mentioned about having certain tools for the job! Did you...

Identify base, collector, and emitter of transistor

I have to take issue with this method, especially as it depends on the sensitivity of a meter. Just to clarify, I have four meters. Three digital and one analog. And never ONCE have I successfully been able to identify Emitter or Collector. There is obviously the possibility that I am just plain...

    is electronics a dying hobby?

Hi Rick, I'd say evolving. In more ways than one! It can't be dying as the arduino etc and the shields still had to be designed by electronic engineers. I can't really see through hole disappearing any time soon either. Mainly because of things like breadboard testing and prototypes. Imagine...

    hand crank telephone ( 5 bar stromberg-carlson)

Hi Kevin, There are quite a few videos on youtube repairing and converting these. You might find one that goes into detail. This one (3 mins in) shows what they should do from the factory. It might get you started!. Martin
