    Yes Steve I think your right, the shorted turn will have a high circulating current (Eddy) whose energy must come from somewhere and this is the coil. Its the same as adding series resistance. Adam

    If one of the end colours is anything other that Brown, Red, Gold or Silver. Then this is the start end. If both ends are Brown or Red then as Kris said work it out both ways, failing that measure them. Thanks Adam

    No check out the website for other parts that might work. Search for the manufacturer on RS, Farnell, Mouser, digikey etc. See if they got anything suitable.

    I can't see how this will work. The voltage on the output (cathode) of the diode will be a function of the current being supplied by the diode so it won't be far from the high voltage supply as long as it can handle the maximum current passing through it. I don't know what diode you are using...
