555's are terrible, no they're not, yes they are, no they're not

iimagine is bang on the mark. I have mentored university student. What's the first chip they want to rule the world with. Yep 555 timer. They have no place in modern electronic design, they are fine for the hobbyist but if we teach these new guys to use them for everything then if they choose a...

555's are terrible, no they're not, yes they are, no they're not

edit: This thread extracted from here: https://www.electronicspoint.com/electronics-newbie-controlling-led-illumination-t266361.html 555 timers are rubbish and should be banned any crediable engineer would not use them. You could try a constant current charging a capacitor as part of an osc...

Any advise for this robot schematic?

Is this just a motor or a servo? They are different beasts. Thanks Adam

Any advise for this robot schematic?

Kcoer It looks like you are powering a timer from a 10k resistor through the npn. We would usually use a pnp as a power switch because of the lower voltage drop. Thanks Adam

    Servo Circuit

Is this an RC servo? If this is the case then most run on 4.8V to 6V so you need to drive it with PWM. 1 to 2ms with 20ms space between pulses is what's normally used. Thanks Adam

Auto amplifier diagnostics, output very low

Good helpful advice steve. I wish others would follow suit. This is why we are here to offer advice which may sometimes be incorrect, we are all here to learn. Regards Adam

    Replacing Capacitor

I think the K is the tolerance. 220 is 22pF from what I understand just like 223 is 22nF and 224 is 220nF. Thanks Adam

    Replacing Capacitor

Is this what you are looking for? http://search.alkon.net/cgi-bin/pdf.pl?pdfname=01790.pdf It's a metallised polyester film capacitor. I found some on Vishays website that might do the job. You need to check what the capacitor is doing in the circuit really to make sure you get the correct...

Auto amplifier diagnostics, output very low

I disagree Six_Shooter. If the amplifier has an input low pass filter which many do and this has become faulty then if he checked the input signal and found it to be low and this was the cause of the fault. What wild goose chase is this. Fault finding is a logical process starting at the input...

    Help with Dallas 1-wire circuit

Can you sketch something down and let us have a look. What are the names of the semiconductors you are planning to use. Adam

    circuit simulation software

LTspice is quite good. You 'dont need multimeter. I have been in this game for over twenty years. I don't use dvm much. Adam

What type of a connector is it?

Might get one from a model shop. Looks like a standard rc battery connector to me. Ada

    Help with Dallas 1-wire circuit

If you are talking about the dallas iButtons then their are two options supply a pull up of say 2K2 to the output., the device gets it's power from the resistor which charges up an internal capacitor. Or in parasitic mode the data from the micro charges up the internal capacitor which is what...

    photo diode/transistor

If it were a NPN transistor then as along as reverse voltage and current is low then they make very good diodes. Much better temperature tracking if using more than one transistor, than using diodes. Tie the base of a transistor to its collector and now this can be used as a low power diode...

Auto amplifier diagnostics, output very low

Please don't sigh, it's very rude. You may have been installing car audio for twenty years or so but a lot of us have been designing electronic circuits for a lot longer. Without detailed information on the exact amplifier we can only throw things into the pot as suggestions, they are called...

Need help putting together small Phono Preamp for Xmas

Oooh your looking at a quite complex circuit here to design yourself if you want true RIAA response. When they made records they used to reduce the low frequency signals and boost the high signal to prolong the life of the stylus and help with pops from the record itself. You need to do the...

Auto amplifier diagnostics, output very low

Do you think you might not have enough drive from the iPhone? Car amps plug into the back of car stereos don't they. The output of a common car stereo would be something like 25W per channel max. You might find you need to amplify the signal first. Driving a set of 32 Ohm headphones is miles...
