    You might be thinking of a Capacitor, you can take energy (small amounts) and fill a capacitor, the only difference being, a capacitor charges and discharges all it's energy in only a few MS, while a battery can not.

    I remember once hearing Rust is a Semi Conductor sometimes used in WW2 to try and pick up a radio signal from the Allies hiding out in Germany. Is it possible some rust is obscuring the results? eg making contact or not making contact or increasing resistance in the slider part of the pot?

    if it is wrong, it's as simple as cutting the cable and flip the 2 connecting wires, if you're still not sure, use a multimeter and slice the cable off, and measure the resistance to the plug on the end of the cord with the 2 wires, you'll be able to locate the positive terminal like that...
