12 7 segment displays

heyguys and girls, a friend asked me to make an item for his bobba fet outfit. he wants 2 rows of 6 7segment displays (the figure 8 ones) to randomly turn on/ off each segment.
I have ideas but then he through in a bit of a wild card hewants it to read a word every now and then. I thought microcontroller but unless its pre-built I get stuck with designingthe board.
if anyone has anything similiar or knows where to buy one, or has an awesome schematic for me then that would be great. ty in advance

One option is to have a high frequency (say 20MHz) oscillator driving a counter and using a 555 to display the count on each transition (without resetting the counter)

If you only use the low order 6 digits, the lower ones will be fairly random (well, they'll appear to be random).
