7 segment LED counter

I would like to use the 7 segment LED counter circuit to count pulses from a shaft of a motor. Can the counter count both up and down? Is there a pin on the BCD counter that tells it to count up or down?

Also how would I be able to detect which way the motor is turning?

hi! if you going to implement BCD up/down counter you can use IC 74ls90 and 74ls47 and Binary coding decimal,

The CD4040 IC is a binary ripple counter, not a shift register.
