Anyone know how to wire an alternator & regulator to charge a battery?

Does anyone know how to wire a Ford alternator (out of a 1990 Taurus)
with it's external voltage regulator such that I can safely charge a
battery. There's four terminals on the voltage regulator marked I, F,
S, A and the alternator has a BAT post, ground post and a two prong
plug marked F & S. I can send detailed pictures of what I have if
that would help. I'm looking for exact wiring to each teminal on the
alternator, regulator and battery.

All I want to do is run the alternator off a lawnmower engine to make
a home made generator. If there are other newsgroups that are better
suited for this type of query I'd love to hear them as well.

Visit your local library and photocopy the page in their Chilton's Manual that
has the diagram of that FORD charging system, it'll be easy to figure out from
there.

Yeah, I've heard that Chevys are the way to go, but I already have
this brand new 100 amp alternator and brand new voltage regulator so
thought I'd give it a try. Unfortunately, I've yet to come across a
website that can tell me how to wire them together. I'm sure it's
simple enough, I just don't want to fry my battery by overcharging it.
Thanks for the advice so far, I guess I'll have to keep on looking.

You left somthing out. There must be a ground connection for
the voltage regulator. Perhaps a mounting lug?

That said,
1) There is a common ground connection from
battery (-) the alternator, and the regulator.
2) There is a connection from battery(+) to the
BaT terminal of the alternator.
3) The regulator controls the alternator field strength to
control it's output. I would say that the F & S on the
alternator connect to the same terminals on the regulator.
Not sure what the function of S is (sense maybe?).
4) I would be ignition. Connect that to battery (+) to
make the whole thing run.
5) Not sure what to do with A.

Disclaimer: I'm just making an educated guess. And yes,
I have an education in electronics.

Just to be sure you should probably do a Google on
Ford Alternator, Ford electrical, or Ford "charging system".

OK. Took my own advise and found that the above is basicly
correct.
I usually goes to the ignition switch. You can hook it directly
to Bat(+) or to a switch that goes to Bat(+)
A goes to the alternator BAT terminal.
