Broken toaster

My toaster broke and I'd like to see if I can fix it rather than replace it. I think it happened when I pulled the lever up manually to abort the toasting operation prematurely as is my custom. I saw a bright orange light under the toaster and at the point the lever would no longer stay in the down/active position when pressed, no does the electric element light.

The fuse is not blown.

Look for a broken wire (and try not to kill yourself).

Don't do anything with the power turned on.

See if the element is open, or if some other wire has broken. Maybe you can fix it. But unless it's a really expensive toaster...
