Bulk charging with a welder?

My present fuel-burning generator is also a welder.

Weld output is DC, switchable constant current or constant voltage.

Any reason why, if carefully set up and monitored, the welding section
(which is far more capable than the 110/220 AC section) could not be
hooked up as a charging source, if properly monitored and controlled?

ie, pick a recharge rate (C/20 or C/10) and set the welder output to
that current - when it hits appropriate voltage, switch to voltage mode
and maintain the adsorb voltage (or just shut down, since it's the fuel
generator and it's only for keeping things from getting too bad in
battery discharge land, not finely finishing the bank at great wastage
of fuel).

I can see some definite control and safety issues to be covered, but
nothing appears to be unworkable as I turn it over in my mind.
