Ceiling fan blades wont spin freely

Please help.. the ceiling fan on my room stopped working.. so i brought it down and after a quick inspection i noticed that the blades wont spin freely.. i can spin it by hand but it quickly comes to a stop as soon as I let go.. what could be the problem?

The first thing I'd check as long you've got it down, is the fan motor housing for dirt, grime, insect bodies or whatever
else might have gotten into the rotating section of the fan. It might just need a good cleaning (contact cleaner spray and/or compressed air blow-out).

If bronze bushings instead of ball bearings . . . . .Gummed lubrication.

Just fixed my own fan, not long ago. This happends after running it for a few years. Took mine apart and cleaned "the middle pin". Added som oil and it worked perfectly again. Might be the answer. However, if you lack the knowledge of taking it apart and putting it back together you can end up breaking it.
