I've started to add some of my classic reprints to
<http://www.tinaja.com/glair01.asp#early>

There's eight of them so far, with dozens more about to be added.
Both construction projects and tutorials.

The files are single load PDF's using Adobe's new Clearscan.
Most of the text is now fully searchible.

I did not use the 4046 all that much.
There was some coverage in my CMOS Cookbook.

Do you have a better reference?

Make sure you are in the right section.

Try <http://www.tinaja.com/glib/colorg01.pdf>

Otherwise, try a real adobe reader.

The third party links are page-at-a-time and unsearchable.
My links are full document and searchable with smaller file sizes.

I only see one page of nixiec01.pdf and shiftreg-1.pdf.

That happened to me on a downloaded issue of Circuit Cellar the other month.
But if I recall it didn't work on Acrobat either.

Thanks! Maybe I can now get rid of some of my old Radio Electronics,
many of which I've saved for your articles.

The links all work properly for me using PCLOS Linux and KPDF.

Any chance you have some old MODERN ELECTRONICS magazines?

These are enormously hard to find, and I want to scan my hacker columns
from them. Especially http://www.tinaja.com/glib/marcia.pdf entries.

Ooops, my mistake. It was Forest Mimms that wrote the article.
Popular Electronics, July/August 1980

Nine little article on the 4046 pll operation.

I tried looking at a few documents. Works fine in Foxit Reader 2.2.
Search function works a charm.

Clearscan, while downright wonderful, does seem to be quirky.

On some reprints, it gets most of the main text.
On others, it actually gets text off photos and schematics and
approaches full search coverage.

It is even swift enough to find both regular and hyphenated words!

Sadly, clearscan is only available on Acrobat 9 professional.

It could get even better. It sure would be nice to be able to edit their
fonts. And there is no easy way to fix search artifacts.

Carefully done hires scans appear to be a must for the best results.
I'm not completely happy with our present uploads. But getting them in
place takes priority over getting them perfect.

Third party? I used the link you posted.

And the Adobe stuff is buggy, slow, bloated crap. Foxit and CutePDF
are *way* faster, free, and don't hang up my PC.

The problem with Foxit is that it always blurs the edges of the
letters and you can't switch it off. Seems like a modern thing but I
can't focus properly on such text. <rant> I really don't understand
that. We have crystal sharp TFT screens so text is not blurred and now
they start to blur text in software????? Should we send our old CRT
screens to India???</rant>

Anyway, did you try Acrobat reader 9? It is way better than the
previous versions.

That ASCII keyboard from '74 sure is a nifty design! Most of the stuff
I'm working on isn't more complex but has a tcp/ip stack and a
webserver none the less. OTOH that would make the keyboard readable
from your iPhone :)

will give them a call and see.

There's another free reader at http://www.docu-track.com. They've been
doing a pretty good job on it; very responsive to bug reports. It's
become my everyday reader.

WRT text, the options setting allows you to disable text smoothing and
also to adjust the gamma for text rendering. The default (1.0 gamma and
smoothing turned on) works okay for me but it does give one a choice.

I went through a couple boxes of old magazines I have from 1971 to 1974.
All I have are Mechanix Illustrated, Popular Science and Playboy.
Now back to my magazines ;-)
