If you have managed to put together step/dir drives for the steppers, then you just need the free S/W such as Mach3 etc

Is MACH3 compatible with Arduino based CNC machines?

Gluing a heat sink on would work - alternatively you could solder copper 'fins' to the pins to achieve the same effect as the copper pcb lands.
