we are planning to do a project which is related to soccer.. the aim here is to detect whether the ball has crossed the goalline or not.. we believe that the basic idea of using line detectors will work only if  we are able to differentiate between the ball crossing the line or any other external object crossing the line...
please suggest on how we should proceed ...
thanks

Short of using a complex image recognition system the only way to distinguish the ball from the goal keeper is to tag the ball in a similar manner to how goods are often tagged to tackle shoplifting.

The trouble is I'm not aware of any anti-shoplifting system fast and accurate enough to be used for this.

thanks for your reply..
for a project like this one, we feel that  a physical model representing the whole scenario would be sufficient.. so by slowly rolling a small ball over a line(having detectors and thick width) and the ball being tagged in the same ways as the goods are tagged to prevent shoplifting as suggested earlier, the problem regarding the speed of the ball will be solved...
is speed of the ball the only problem here ?
plz let us know your opinion regarding this..
thanks

I don't know, I've not had much real life experience with anti-shoplifting devices. I know how they work but wouldn't be able to tell you whether they're fast enough.

Why don't you do some research and ask a manufacturer of an anti-shoplifting system?
