How to calculate R and C values for snubber circuit

Greetings,
I am going to be using a push button to control the on/off operation of a 12 V DC motor which will run up to 10 A (steady state). To prevent arcing across the contacts, I intend to use an RC snubber in parallel with the contacts. My question is how do I calculate the required values for R and C?

Your question cannort be answered in general as the Snubber depends on the operating characteristics of your circuit (voltage, current, load, frequency). Have a look at this application note. I hope it helps.

By the way: at 12 V I don't think you need a snubber at all. If you use a relay that's rated for this voltage and current (possibly automotive) you will not need a snubber. Arcing is not an issue at 12V.

Thanks Harald,
The application note was very interesting.
I guess I won't need a snubber
