IR Remote Controls

Hi,

I am investigating a project which will ultimately be able to control a number of televisions - volume, channel etc. My problem is getting the 'codes' required for each television.  But codes as in the actual binary stream the control outputs.

Does anyone have any background on IR remote controls, how they work, 'one-for-alls' etc.  I am mainly interested in the digital signals.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
