I have built a joule thief circuit on a breadboard and the LED will not light with a AA Battery. If I attach a 3 volt battery the LED will light. Seems like I have problem with the toroid. I have wound the wires the same as those featured on youtube. I have a K ohm resistor and a 3904 transistor. I am new to electronics and suggestions are appreciated. Also, an help in diagnosing the problem is appreciated.

Did you try swapping the leads of one of the two coils?
