LED "Pro" Light show

I want to have a lighting unit that has lights like you'd find in a pro-audio provider. Would an LED provide a significant enough amount of light in a dark room to have a good effect?

No I want to make something completely myself, but have it have the same effect. I want to just use LEDs, but how many would it take to generate an impressive effect?

Yeah, I too am completely ignorant of the effect you're trying to achieve. Perhaps you can supply a link to something that will make it more obvious?
