Glad you got it working.
A few notes on your explanation though:
1) the three terminals are the base, emitter, and collector (not receiver).
2) It's a lot easier to think of a small current flowing between the base and emitter controlling (regulating was the term you used -- and it's a fair use of that word) a larger current that flows between the collector and emitter.
3) It's just a LED, not a LED light bulb.
Minor issues really -- don't take it as a severe criticism.
It looks like you've got things working and the problem solved.
