Messages sent when keyboard key is pressed

When pressing keys on a keyboard what messages are sent to a PC?

Is there any format?

Is it ok to send this message using a microcontroller (through USB cable)?

Format is usually ASCII..depends if you just want to display it or do something with it.

Arduino make it easy.
