newbie questions

Hi,

I'm new to electronics and have some questions regarding a project I am try to make.

I want to turn a plastic corrugate display board using a Sankyo SHE9L motor. I have the frame and all made now I need the electronics.

I think I should use a potentiometer to control the speed. If I use a 9V battery what size resistor should I use? Any other components needed? Also how should this be wired?

I can't find a datasheet for the motor so I don't know its maximum current.
The current will probably be too high for a potentiometer )it will burn up) and also too high for an ordinary little 9V battery (it might last for only a few minutes).

An electric motor needs a high current to begin running. A resistor in series reduces the current then it might not start running.

Usually a potentiometer controls a Pulse-Width-Modulation circuit for motor speed control. Then the motor can start running when the speed is set low.

A transistor or darlington transistor can also have its input voltage adjusted with a potentiometr so its output can control the speed of the motor but then the motor might not start running if the speed is set low.
