Problem with Compass Downloader

I am hoping someone can help me out. I am a DIY with an Ademco 50P panel
and have Compass 1.5.0.0. Initially I was using a Hayes 14.4 modem to setup
the panel and it worked imtermitantly. Since I rarely make any changes, it
was good enough. Recently, I went to make a change to the programming and
had issues connecting. I read through a lot of old posts and decided to buy
a Hayes Smartmodem 1200 and avoid any issues with compatibility.
Unfortunately, I continue to have the same issues. I believe it connects to
the panel ok initially, but at some point in the protocol exchange the panel
stops responding. The status window on the bottom begins
Dial Phone Number
Connect Command
Return CSID
Speed Change
At which point, Compass continues to try and send, but the panel stops
responding. I believe the software is initally communicating with the panel
because it exchanges the CSID and the fact that the panel is a 50P Rev #6
Seq#B. Does anyone know why this is happening and why it thinks it should
change speeds? Any help would be appreciated.

Jim,

Thanks for the quick response. The dips were in fact were set wrong so I
made the adjustment and selected the appropriated modem in the software.
Unfortunately, it still exhibits the same behaviour. Any other ideas?

In my case, the problem turned out to be that the phone line I was dialing
out from, is a VoIP line through my internet connection. Thanks for the
advise, Jim. I guess the conclusion would be that in addition to these
panels being highly selective of modems, they are also ultra sensative to
phone line quality. In todays world, this is insane. When is the alarm
industry going to get out of the 70's?

When is the alarm industry going to get out of the 70's?

We have been asking the same question for the past 20 years...If alarm
systems evolved the same way as computers, our homes would be protected by a
graviton force field by now... :)

When their customers stop expecting their alarm systems to be free.

Jerry, Jerry, Jerry....with that kind of attitude....you're never going to
fit in. Choosing the biggest piece of shit in the market doesn't help
either. Ademco invented the 70's, just don't try to hook anything up to
current technology from them, because their platform changes every few
years, not their technology.

I haven't followed this thread; however, you do bring up a good related
point. The alarm industry is NOT ready for VoIP services which are expected
to explode in the next several years. Until the industry comes up with a
technical solution, all we can do is advise clients that we can't reliably
install an alarm system on a VoIP line. But this is no solution !! I posted
a notice on my website advising clients I won't install on VoIP until we as
an industry can be sure of what will transpire when we do. I know most other
firms around town who are also taking the same cautionary approach.

So if there are any industry representatives who still read this newsgroup
(????), may I suggest you take that back to your R&D people as a high
priority item to resolve....
