I have always like radios. Even though many of them have given way to other things (like the internet), I wonder if there is still a place for radios. So, I have several observations and questions:

In the old days, I used to love to listen to police scanners. I had a base unit and hand held, and made great use of them. Now, many services are encrypted and thus, not accessible. I still have my Bearcat hand held and have recently reprogrammed it with the little I can get (mostly ambulance, and a few other utility services).

Internet radio (I love these things and I have two of them- a base station and a portable. The portable runs on wi-fi. The base has wifi and ethernet. They are very cool in that you can listen to zillions of radio stations across the entire globe, in digital, crystal clear quality. I always have all shows on while I am soldering. Some of them are the paranormal stations or other off beat talk shows. I find them entertaining (not believable, for the most part). You can also program favourite stations via a webpage, for these radios.

I know one can get radio stations. from across the globe via the net, but these radios make it very convenient. You don't need to hunt through zillions of web pages.

They are. a lot of fun and quality built. Here is my base station:

Here is my portable:

Shortwave, CBs and Hams- which is where I have questions.

In my youth, I always had a CB radio . They were fun and a great way to goof off when bored.

I have never had a HAM radio.

I do have a shortwave radio ( it's this one:
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B001HX4D84/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_image?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ). For $28, it works surprisingly well. Although, I paid $16.00. (they went way up in. price).

I am thinking g of possibly getting a decent CB, HAM and Shortwave radio (better than the one I have). But I don't know if it may be worth getting these.

I'm not sure how much people are using them these days. Are CBs still worth getting? How about HAMs? Shortwaves?

Does anyone. have any familiarity with these types of radios, and for shortwave in particular, does anyone know of a good shortwave radio that is decent but also affordable?

Any other thoughts?

Thank-you

Don't think you'll find much CB stuff these days being used......
Ham radio maybe ...best bet would be do a search on some of the forums and see how many are still active.
They tend to be a bit like vintage car collectors though, if you have to ask how much then you probably can't afford it.
Don't forget any licence requirements also depending on where you live.

I have been doing amateur ( ham) radio since 1980
have owned and still own a number of the 3 major brands and a couple of the minor ones.
Kenwood, Icom and Yaesu being the major ones

my current "shack in a box" since 2012 is the Kenwood TS2000X .. HF (1.8 - 30MHz), 6M, 2m 70cm and 23cm (23cm = 1250 - 1300 in Australia)

Yes, as bluejets said amateur radio requires a licence in all countries that I am aware of

I have also built much equip., something that ham radio is ideal for .... most of my construction activities
have been in the microwave bands, 2.4GHz, 3.4GHz, 5.8GHz, 10.3GHzand 24GHz

Much enjoyment to be had along with heavy doses of self teaching/learning when constructing at those freq's
It's been a very fulfilling hobby for a huge part of my life
