Another conundrum. The part I need is obsolete. I did manage to find some obsolete parts dealers that do have the part, but the powers that be have asked for other alternatives....

Maybe I should ask International Rectifier? I thought I'd come here and ask as you guys have been very helpful so far...

Big problem is packaging. The replacement part has to be the same size. Wouldn't a replacement part for an obsolete part number be the same size??

This page list a few modern replacements, and claims the info cam from International Rectifier...

http://www.allxref.com/irf/irfba22n50a.htm

Several of them look like they are phased out but still easy to obtain from normal distributors, and will likely lead you to a new cross reference part if you dig a little bit more...

These are a proprietary modified To-220 package and every company has there own version of this modified package, but they will all be very similar in size so fitment should not be an issue...

I too have superiors who like to wave their hand dismissively telling me to just go get
something else that will work.
Good luck, that's a package IRF had exclusive rights to.
Do all the leg work you want to, or find out if your superiors want to face facts,.
And while you're at it, you might mention if they want to fix this thing the next time it
fails, maybe they ougtta buy a few spares for you to have on hand.
