RFIDs and GPS analogies

i'm trying to use a Radio Frequency Identification Identification devices to calculate distances with some kind of wireless networking system. The trouble is I don;t know about either of them (I'm a Computer Science Engg. student ;D). i'd be grateful if someone gives me a lead on this
