I have bought two different 3W RGB LEDs, and on both the "red" is decidedly orange to the eye. One is from Kingbright and it's dominant red wavelength is listed as 625nm, which they call reddish orange. I have looked and looked and cannot find any the have a red wavelength any higher than 630nm, (and many are lower, like 620nm), so I suspect none of these would be any redder.

So, does anyone know of a an RGB high power LED that will produce a true red color? If not, does anyone know why they are all so orange?

I have decided to reply because nobody else has. I can't guarantee that the answer is totally accurate so I decided to wait and see if someone better informed than I answered first :)

I believe *a* reason to use a shorter wavelength "red" is to make it appear brighter.

Our eye is less sensitive to 630nm than it is to 620nm, and by edging the wavelength that way you can make a device which seems brighter.

Having said that, I bought some cheap 3W RGB leds a while back (so cheap they had no part number!) and the red in those seems pretty red to me.

Try Nichia. I don't know about their RGB LEDs, but they make all manner of LEDs. The red ones are a deep ruby red.
