Ring Main

I am studying at the moment to become an electrician,but there is something
that i would like to know now.

I believe that you can have as many sockets on a ring main circuit as you
want,as long as you don't exceed 100sq meters of floor space.I have been
told that you cannot exceed 60 meters of cable.Is this so ?

i am c&g 2360 pts 1&2,&2381(16th)and have neer heard of the 60 mtr thing
before .Also, i believe(though could be wrong)that the 100 sq mtr rule only
appliues to domestic properties.Consider office space,i have done plenty of
that type of work and it's usually wired in 4mm singles over areas that
often exceed 100 sq mtr.An awful lot of the wiring regs can be open to
interpretation,also,they are not as yet statutary.If your considering
housebashing as we call it,the way i do things on a typical rewire is one
ring main for downstairs,one for up,same with lighting,any
radials(shower,cooker,immersion,etc),and depending on the anticpated
appliance count,often a seperate ring for the kitchen.

I'm not suggesting this is the case, but perhaps the 60 meters might be
a rule of thumb for limiting voltage drop on a fully loaded ring main.
Try a worst case permisable voltage drop calculation at 60 meters for
2x 2.5mm.
