Shotkky diode used with switching regulator Lm2576

Hello, per the datasheet the LM2576 switching regulator IC requires a shottky diode to be used with it. Is this absolutely necessary, or is it only used to increase performance? Also, if you could just briefly state what the diode actually contributes to the system it would be appreciated.

The regulator runs at 52kHz which is not exceptionaly fast so an ordinary fast diode should do.

The Schottky will drop less voltage so the circuit will be more efficient. A 1N400x probably will not do.

TI as a online simulation tool where you can optimize components selection to balance efficiency/cost and size. A good way to try various diodes.
