Why are you so happy to be totally ripped off by *private* insurers when
you could have an altogether better public national health service for
everyone by paying about half that amount in taxes?
So, you're another of those who insists that we learn the hard way?

Just watch - you'll be paying more like 10X the amount, rather than half,
and you won't have any say in the matter.

Good Luck!

Fool. I live in the UK. I pay a fraction of what you do in the US even
for private health insurance. I have never had to use it.

The arguments being used now in America are the same ones used in the UK
during the formation of the the UK's NHS.

Color yourself lucky. How long is the waiting list for, say, an MRI or

For that matter, how long is the waiting list for an ordinary coronary
bypass?

Hi Keith,

Initially, it certainly won't be.

It *never* will be, unless it's rationed to the bone. Even the third
that is nationalized can't pay its bills now.
Long-term I believe the idea is something like the Wal*Mart effect: The
government will be such a huge customer of drug companies, hospitals, etc.
that they'll be able to start negotiating serious reductions in cost. Add in
some tort reform such that doctors' malpractice insurance drops substantially,
and maybe we'll get there.

Why don't we do that now?
But that is speculation on my part; I don't think anybody really knows for
certain.

But you want to jump in with both feet not knowing what's under the
surface?
Feel free to buy supplemental insurance?

Nope. Illegal.
Are all of the senior citizens presently receiving medicare commies? In a
group of 100 seniors, I bet you could count on one hand how many voluntarily
decline medicare coverage due to a conviction that it's a form of socialism or
communism. And all they "did" to earn the right to medicare was to get old!
At least those guys at the VA hospitals were generally willing to risk their
lives for our country in order to *earn* their health care...

They have no choice. Ask the same people 50 years before, whether
they'd rather pay the Medicare tax or not.
I think it already is largely that way -- while not absolutely identical,
bridges and roads are built to largely the same standards nationwide, HUD
housing is subsidized at roughly the same rate (considering local market
conditons), food assistance programs are largely standardized across the
nation, etc.

We're not talking about health care for the indigent, here. We're
talking about *NATIONALIZING* the entire industry.
If you're asking the government for a handout, while they may occasionally be
extenuating circumstances, in general everyone should be getting the same
thing.

But that is *NOT* what we're talking about.
This does gets complicated in that very few programs are entirely federally
funded (e.g., road construction, schools, etc. all are partially locally
funded).
Mostly.

Sure, but his better-than-bog-standard-government is a "perk" of his job (as
is congress's). Private companies can and should continue to offer
supplemental insurance coverage to recruit and maintain their employees, when
financial viable.

You really are clueless. That is *NOT* what is going on.

BTW, also note that illegals will be allowed free health care, too.
That's certainly going to reduce costs.

Hi Keith,

In some proposed legislation, apparently so -- and that's wrong. I can't
imagine such provisions will pass, though, even with the current democratic
majority. We don't live in a country radical enough that overnight private
health insurance will be outlawed; it just isn't going to happen.

Yeah, but you seem to be convinced that Obama really is after 100% identical
health care for all -- no additional insurance/self-funded procedures allowed.
As liberal as he is, I just don't think that's really what he's after. If it
is, and if he gets it, he'll be committing political suicide.

Check out this article:
http://www.factcheck.org/politics/more_health_care_scare.html

The "page 16" snippet (that Obama claims he's unfamiliar with) *might* have
been someone's attempt to kill off private insurance, but the "it's just
poorly written" explanation seems far more likely. Never attribute to malice
what can be explained by incompetence and all...

M$, not so much. They require a credit card just to talk to someone

The problem with M$ crap is that it always needs support, but support

Better tie that job into the company's MRP system. If done right
engineers will quickly know what their new design costs and also try to
use parts that are already released and/or preferred where possible.
Spitting out and formatting the BOM as desired should be done by the
CAD, so that it can be piped into the company's computer and the
purchasers can get on the horn.

Not all information is on the schematic and there are several versions
of the product built off the same schematics. We also need
information stripped for thru-hole/SMT, hardware,... The BOM spit
out by OrCad (not my choice) is incomplete and has to be massaged to
build the final BOM. The BOM I built this week had about a third of
the parts NoPop'd. The rules for all of this are fairly simple but
it's easy to make a mistake. Access would make this process
automatic.

There is no chance of tying what we do into purchasing's system. I
can't even get an ID on the system, though our admin has one.

Seriously out of date information. A series of waiting list reduction
schemes, including the massive Fast Track program
( http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/3610753.stm )
have reduced waiting lists to 2-4 weeks in the main, even for non-
urgent cases.

The Fast Track program is coming to an end, but the resources are being
deployed elsewhere; for example some of the mobile MRI scanners are
being used for CATS ( http://www.careuk.com/content/about_cats ).

Hi Keith,

Good question. Clearly there are many powerful interests who aren't
interested in seeing their margins shrink or their jobs removed; few people
are willing to put the country's interests ahead of there own,
unfortunately -- particularly when they know they're just one tiny drop in an
ocean of bureaucracy and inefficiency. The infrastructure we have today is so
entrenched that it will take massive policy changes to significantly change
it.

What makes you think it will change under ObinableCare?
As I say, the current system is massive -- overnight it's not going to
crumble. Absolute worst case, Obama has 3-1/2 more years to do damage... and
plenty of representatives and congressmen have far less than that. I'm
willing to see what happens -- plus the absolute worst case is far worse than
the "expected" case.

You don't understand. There is *NO* going back. We've seen that with
Social Security and Medicare.
In some proposed legislation, apparently so -- and that's wrong. I can't
imagine such provisions will pass, though, even with the current democratic
majority. We don't live in a country radical enough that overnight private
health insurance will be outlawed; it just isn't going to happen.

That's the deal. We're not talking about pie in the sky here. We're
talking about the deal that is on the table.
Yeah, but you seem to be convinced that Obama really is after 100% identical

Hi Keith,

Since it sounds like you're using ORCAD... do you have the CIS option?

No. We use a property field to mark optional components and the
prefix string "NP_" in the "P/N" and "value" properties to mark
unpopulated components.
If so,
then ORCAD purportedly supports "variants" whereby it'll kick out different
BOMs depending on which configuration of the product you've selected.

Not an option, right now. Not having it does make documentation for
debug a bit more of a problem.
It's not clear to me that you'd necessary need Access for this, but I
definitely think it'd be worth your (well, your company's) time to automate
the BOM massaging.

Access is on my PC at work. Don't know why, but it is. I've been
doing the work with Excel, so far. It works, but there are silly
things like collating sequences and BOM formats that are a PITA.

Hi Keith,

OK, but for all the problems that social security and medicare have, surely a
solid majority of people in this country would rather keep *them* rather than
dismantle them, yes? As such, if Obamacare is the same way, and a solid
majority of people support it... well, that's just how things are *supposed*
to work in a democracy, even if it is a bit dumb.

Even if Jim's properly right-thinking great-granddaughter becomes president, I
bet she'll keep SS and medicare around. :)

I guarantee you that the current deal, as-written and free-standing, will not
pass.

Maybe, but I prefer to give the benefit of the doubt; I did the same for Bush

I try to be... I actually used to be more conservative, but then I married a
democrat. :)

What does bother me is that the country is so polarized these days; the
ability for people to respectfully disagree seems to be waning. I think it's
related to a dwindling sense of "community" people seem to have -- Jon & Joerg
had a good thread on that topic.

As much as you like to insult liberals, I've generally read a bit of
good-natured fun into it as well -- the fact that you and Win can sit down and
have a beer together suggests to me that you're still one of the "good guys."

---Joel

That was before Win got on his "Bush is a moron" kick.

Though I note, as of late, his posts totally avoid politics...
probably because he realizes now that his "boy" is a dud who will
destroy America as we know it, barring some catastrophe (natural or
otherwise) to force a change of direction ;-)
