First post, wish I had found this forum months ago

They say stepper motor suppliers love newbies

I have a Warco wm18 milling machine and added a power z-axis stepper motor but it stalls at high speeds

This is the driver I am using - https://www.oyostepper.com/goods-11...20-50VDC-for-Nema-17-23-24-Stepper-Motor.html This is the stepper motor - https://www.oyostepper.com/goods-49...45Ncm-12V-for-DIY-CNC-3D-PrinterExtruder.html This is the power supply -https://www.oyostepper.com/goods-91...15230VAC-Enclosed-Switching-Power-Supply.htmlI have the driver set to 4.2a, I think, can't remember without opening the case, and set to 1600 steps/revIt runs fine, but tends to stall at max speed, especially with the head lifted.FYI, the head does have a gas strut assist, so what am I doing wrong?

You mentioned that the driver is set to 4.2A, which seems quite high for a NEMA 17 motor rated at 1.5A. Overdriving the motor may cause excessive heat and potentially damage it over time. Set the driver current to match your motor’s rated current. For the NEMA 17 motor you linked, set it to 1.5A. Make sure the driver is in the correct microstepping mode to balance precision and torque.
