It's Jew's Harp NOT Jewish harp. The name, however popular, has NOTHING to do with Jews or religion. Here is a YouTube video of one guy demonstrating how to to play it. It looks like an expensive toy when built with state-of-the-art (SOTA) technology. The source and trace of the original harps is a mystery. Now if I can just get that other gentleman to play the Jewish harp.
My family was not poor (Dad was a career officer in the U.S. Air Force), but AFAIK we never owned, or seriously considered owning, a Jew's Harp. After I found one for sale in a full-page ad in the back of a pulp magazine, complete with a sketch of the device, I showed the ad to Mom. She showed me, as her child, how to "fake" one using a rubber comb wrapped with wax paper. Free. No Money Back required!
It tickled when I hummed on it, because of the wax paper vibrating against my lips. Back in those days, there was a mail-order company (Johnson-Johnson) that sold all sorts of "interesting" things such as X-Ray viewing glasses, itching powder, magic "snakes" that you lit with a match, and (of course) musical instruments like the Jew's Harp. I don't recall ever purchasing anything from them, but I do remember wanting to. Most visitors to the site would have to resort to the Internet... maybe even to The Cloud... to understand.
