Is it worth a go ?

Absolutely not. Snapon has a lifetime guarantee. Fight it!!.

If it fails, Snapon’s guarantee will filter through their buyers and hopefully STOP their over priced rubbish.

As a side note. A YouTube channel checks the consistency of strength and durability of Snapon. It is shamelessly advertising £300 screwdriver bits when a £24 bigger set was stronger. Absolutely disgusting.
They have said stop production 2023 so in a word throw it in the bin, nice eh?

I have not read others' comments but the chip in the photo is clearly a power regulation stage failure. In Snap-on scanners, these 8-pin ICs are typically DC-DC step-down converters or battery management chips.
If i replaced the chip, would the unit run? ive been told it made need software run?

Hello,

The chip is a power controller that does not need programming.

@olive: it is imho against netiquette to reply without having considered the previous posts. The answer may have been in these before.
these 8-pin ICs
I'm suspecting "you" to be an AI - not being able to count to ten is a typical indicator. We do not want AI generated nonsense in this forum. More of this kind and you'll be banned from the forum.

Next time start off with that.
It would literally take me 10 seconds to replace that chip and I will charge you $1000 plus shipping to do so.
Advice helping you and instructions are free.

Probably because whatever(s) that chip supplied, failed and that's what caused the chip you replaced to fail
