Trying to get a simple world clock to work consistently. The pcb is really simple. This is close to the only discrete semi ( a c9013 transistor) other tgan the main chip. Its has no markings and is about 5mm duameter and 9mm tall. Initially I thought it was a capacitor across the main battery input but it's not connected there. The problem I am chasing down is it works for a bit then the unit goes dead....My other thought is either the crystal used for timing has developed a fault

as Bertus said, it's an inductor

It wont be the cause of intermittent operation ... either a dry joint as @Bluejets suggested or maybe a failure of that main chip or matbe the external crystal

It would have really helped if you had posted a photo of the circuit board ... it would be easier to help you
