Found a project at http://www.electronic-circuits-diagrams.com/lightsimages/lightsckt4.shtml And it says to use two CD4017, how are these different to a normal 4017? What does the CD stand for? can i use a 4017 instead? ???

I am interested in building a digital compas, there are several chips that you can get off the internet but none of them just tell you how to build a circuit using it and display the bearing on a display without having to buy an overly expensive kit. Any ideas? ???
