Depending upon which country you are in, you can buy adaptors which allow you to connect one type of plug to a different type of socket.

The (digital) multimeters which I have encountered that give an audio signal with the probes shorted do so only on a continuity range.
You don't say what range you meter was on when it beeped.
Doesn't the manual tell you under what conditions it does so? -

The switch on the trigger pin is a momentary action one?
The circuit looks fine otherwise (with a pull up on pin 2). -
Pin 2 needs to be "pulled up", so connect a resistor from it to the positive supply.
