3 Axis Contoller

After reading this thread I an interested in building a 3 axis controller. This is what I have :
1. Full size Enco mill
2. Digital display for the X,Y nothing for the Z except for a crude chain drive DC motor on the knee and I would move that to the quill.
3. Resolution is only 0.0005
4. Quadrature encoders are on the table with anti-backlash gears, not the modern linear type glass etched encoder.
Is there a way to use 24Volt DC motors 9using a high and low speed PWM controller on each to drive the lead screws and use the encoders for the feedback to the controller?
I have worked on this type of unit (only the mechanical end) I have a good handle on the way it works and a reasonable electronics backround.
Any help would be apreciated.
Thank You
